MALLAIG TO ARISAIG
14 MILES 6 HOURS
MORRIS, PHIL, KEITH, DEREK, ALEX, BILLY, STEWART, ALAN J AND PAUL
TOTAL DISTANCE WALKED SO FAR 1199.5 MILES
Five days walking were planned for this trip. Due to accommodation difficulties we were unable to start where we left off last year at Torridon and jumped south to start at Mallaig. The part between Torridon and Mallaig will be completed at a later date. We set off at 0530 for the drive north stopping for breakfast and fuel at Fort William. We dropped a car off at Arisaig where we would end today’s walk before driving on to Mallaig. As the first mile south from Mallaig would have meant walking on the busy A830 road we left the minibus in a lay-by near Glasnacardoch Bay. Setting off in light rain we were able to walk near the sea edge round passed Rubha Reamhar, Bogha Dearg to the amazing sands at Morar. The rain had gone off and the sun was shining as we made our way along the north side of the sands and up onto the A830 road where we crossed the river before walking on the minor road to Toigal and back onto the fantastic sands. A short distance on we had a tea break and Alan took the opportunity to have a dip in the sea. For the next seven miles we were able to walk close to the sea on beautiful beaches passed Camusdarroch, Traigh and Portnaluchaig. Some rock scrambling or short road walks filled the areas between the beaches The seascapes and views out to the islands of Rum, Eigg and Muck were fantastic. On reaching Gortenachullish we picked up a track shown on the O.S. map which we followed to the finish of the days walk at Arisaig. A welcome pint was enjoyed in the very friendly hotel in Arisaig before we drove to our accommodation at the Lochailort Hotel and Glenuig Inn.
Summary; A great first day’s walk with amazing beaches and views out to Rum, Eigg and Muck.
Highs; Fabulous beaches particularly Morar Sands
Lows; None really.
