DUNURE TO GIRVAN
15 MILES 6 HOURS
MORRIS, BILL AND PHIL
DISTANCE WALKED SO FAR 1473 MILES
Three days walking was planned for this trip. Our accommodation for the two night stay was at the very comfortable and friendly Woodland Bay Hotel which is situated on the Ayrshire Coastal Path (ACP) just south of Girvan. The accommodation and food was very good and very reasonably priced and we have no hesitation in recommending it.
We set of early for the two hour drive to Dunure where Bill dropped Phil and I at the harbour before driving on to Maidens where he left the car and walked back to meet us.
The weather was excellent with lovely sunshine when we set off walking from the harbour towards Dunure Castle.
We followed the ACP from Dunure and as the tide was out we were able to walk on the beach passed Croy caravan park onto Culzean Bay and the amazing Culzean Castle. After viewing the castle we walked on into Maidens where we enjoyed a tea break and cake in Little K’s Kitchen cafe. On leaving Maidens we parted company with the ACP which moves inland just south of Maidens and we opted to walk round the edge of Turnberry Golf Course passed Turnberry Point and continued along the shore at the sea edge. A small river runs out to sea at Dipple and although the tide was out it still proved a bit difficult to cross. On nearing Girvan we again joined the ACP walking through Girvan Mains Farm into Girvan and the end of the days walk.
Summary; A very easy walk using the Ayrshire Coastal Path most of the way. Good underfoot conditions.
Highs; All enjoyable ….the sands at Culzean Bay were lovely but the castle was special and should not be missed.
Lows; None a really nice day on the coast.
